Tagliol
Also called tagiol (Murano), taglio, tag
A flat steel paddle with sharp edges on a handle, for cutting lines and indentations into hot glass.
What it is
Murano’s glass museum describes the tagiol as a rectangular metal paddle with a wooden handle and sharp edges.[1] Carlo Donà makes them with wood or stainless steel handles, in round-ended (“Pino”) and square-ended shapes, in large and small sizes.[2]
How it’s used
The glass master uses it to make small indentations or rows on the surface of the parison.[1] Sculpting versions are built heavier: BC Metalworking’s taglio, based on glass artist John “Sleepy” Moran’s, has a hardened and tempered spring-steel blade and a counterweight welded to the end of the handle.[3]
