Sculpting tools
Rods with steel balls and other shaped ends, for pushing and modelling glass, including from inside a bubble.
What it is
These are steel rods ending in a ball or other shape. Jasen Johnsen’s inside sculpting tools are 5/16” stainless rods with solid steel balls,[1] and Carlo Donà makes sculpting tools with balls from 5 mm to 50 mm.[2]
How it’s used
Inside sculpting tools are for “sculpting from the inside of a bubble and pushing material out”.[1]
History
Carlo Donà’s family foundry opened in Murano in 1923 making tools for Venetian glassworkers, and the craft has passed through four generations of blacksmiths.[2]
