Pineapple molds
Also called lozenge mold
One-piece dip molds with a lozenge-patterned inside that gives glass a surface like a pineapple.
What it is
A pineapple mold is a cylindrical or truncated-cone one-piece mold with a patterned inside, which produces a decoration resembling the surface of a pineapple.[1] Carlo Donà makes them in six sizes, from 38 × 58 mm to 135 × 220 mm.[3] Like optic molds, they’re described by their number of points, which changes the look of the pattern.[2]
How it’s used
The gather is blown into the mold to take the pattern. A pineapple-mold class at Public Glass covers setting up the gather to go into the mold, choosing pipes, keeping the pattern from melting out, and not getting stuck, as well as using frit with the mold and trapping bubbles in the pattern.[2]
History
Corning’s study of Renaissance Venetian glassworking treats pineapple dip-molding as one of its techniques, with recreations of a three-bubble cup and a footed goblet decorated this way.[1]
