Paddles
Flat wooden, graphite, or metal paddles for flattening glass and shielding the gaffer's hand from heat.
What it is
Paddles are flat pieces of wood or graphite.[1] Blockhead’s wooden paddles are kiln-dried cherry, used wet or dry.[2] Metal versions exist too, like Hegan’s 48”-long metal paddles.[3]
How it’s used
They’re for making flat surfaces, such as the bottom of a piece.[1] Paddles also double as heat shields for the gaffer,[2][3] and long metal ones can serve as loading tools.[3]
Wooden paddles, like blocks, are often dipped in water while working; Blockhead says theirs can be soaked or used dry.[2]
